Best Dark Roast Coffee: 5 Bags Compared by the Roaster’s Own Brew Ratio

The best dark roast coffee for most people is Peet’s Major Dickason’s Blend: it is 100% arabica, sold whole bean in an 18-ounce bag, rated 4.6/5 from 8,500+ Amazon ratings, and Peet’s prints a clear 10 g per 6 oz brew dose on the bag. If you want the darkest, smokiest cup, pick Starbucks French Roast. If you want maximum caffeine, Death Wish is the only bag here that blends in robusta and publishes a caffeine figure.

One detail most dark roast lists skip: these five roasters do not agree on how much coffee to use. Their own instructions range from roughly 1:14 to 1:20 by weight, and one brand contradicts itself. Brewing a dark roast too weak makes it thin; too strong makes it harsh. So below we converted every roaster’s printed recipe to the same coffee-to-water scale.

How we chose

We did not taste-test these coffees. We picked widely sold dark roast whole bean bags with thousands of Amazon ratings, then compared what can be checked: the roaster’s own description of blend and origin, the brewing dose printed on the bag or the roaster’s website, caffeine data where the maker publishes it, independent roast-color readings from Coffee Review where one exists, and the recurring complaints in Amazon’s review summaries. Ratings and counts were checked on Amazon US in November 2026. Prices change daily, so we link to the listing instead of quoting them.

Dark roast coffee comparison

Coffee Beans Bag / format Roaster’s dose Ratio by weight Amazon rating (Nov 2026)
Peet’s Major Dickason’s Blend 100% arabica, Latin America + Indo-Pacific 18 oz bag 10 g per 6 fl oz about 1:17.7 4.6/5, 8,500+ ratings
Kicking Horse Kick Ass 100% organic arabica, Indonesia + Central/South America 10 oz bag 50 g per liter (drip page: 55 g) 1:20 (drip page: about 1:18) 4.5/5, 8,200+ ratings
Starbucks French Roast 100% arabica, multi-origin 18 oz bag 10 g per 180 ml 1:18 4.6/5, 5,400+ ratings
illy Intenso 100% arabica blend 8.8 oz pressurized can 7 g per 8 oz (US FAQ); 7-8 g per 100-150 ml (product page) about 1:34 vs 1:12.5-1:21 4.5/5, 3,100+ ratings
Death Wish Dark Roast Organic arabica + robusta 16 oz bag 2.5 tbsp per 6 fl oz about 1:14 (estimated, see below) 4.6/5, 19,100+ ratings

How we converted: 6 US fl oz is 177 ml, and 1 ml of water weighs about 1 g. Death Wish gives only tablespoons, so we used the 2 tbsp = 10 g equivalence that Peet’s and Starbucks both print; real tablespoon weight varies with grind and bean, so treat 1:14 as an estimate. A lower second number means a stronger brew.

1. Peet’s Major Dickason’s Blend: best overall

Peet’s calls Major Dickason’s its all-time best seller, a blend of Latin American and Indo-Pacific beans, and rates it 75 out of 100 for roast level and 75 for body on its own scale. When Coffee Review cupped it blind in 2012, its Agtron roast reading came in at 37/41, which that lab classes as “very dark”, so this is a properly dark coffee and not a medium roast with a dark label.

Who it’s for: drip and French press drinkers who want a dark cup that reviewers describe as smooth and not overly bitter, and who like a recipe printed on the bag. Who should skip it: anyone who wants single-origin detail or a roast date they can plan around.

  • Pro: 100% arabica, sold whole bean in an 18 oz bag.
  • Pro: Peet’s brew dose (10 g per 6 oz, or 4 tbsp per 12 oz mug) is the same ratio in both units, so it scales cleanly.
  • Pro: 80% of Amazon ratings are 5 stars; Amazon’s review summary highlights flavor, aroma and smoothness for a dark roast.
  • Pro: Peet’s names the French press as an ideal brewer for dark roasts, and suggests a medium grind for drip.
  • Con: Amazon’s summary notes some buyers received beans past their freshness date.
  • Con: Coffee Review’s blind panel found scorched-wood notes dominating and a light, lean body; that review is from 2012, but it fits a very dark roast.

2. Kicking Horse Kick Ass: best organic dark roast

Kick Ass is roasted in the Canadian Rockies from certified organic, Fairtrade arabica sourced from Indonesia and Central and South America. Kicking Horse lists the tasting notes as chocolate malt, molasses and licorice with an earthy finish, and recommends French press, drip and pour over.

Who it’s for: buyers who want organic and Fairtrade certification on a mainstream dark roast. Who should skip it: anyone who dislikes oily beans; Amazon reviewers are split on how oily this one is.

  • Pro: certified organic, Fairtrade and kosher, per the Amazon listing.
  • Pro: Kicking Horse says it adds no preservatives, additives or flavoring.
  • Pro: 4.5/5 from 8,200+ Amazon ratings on the 10 oz bag.
  • Con: Kicking Horse’s own pages disagree on dose (50 g per liter on its general guide, 55 g per liter on its drip page). Start at 55 g if 50 g tastes thin.
  • Con: the 10 oz bag is smaller than the 16-18 oz bags here; compare the per-ounce price before buying.
  • Con: Amazon’s review summary shows mixed views on value and on the oiliness of the beans.

3. Starbucks French Roast: best for the darkest, smokiest cup

Starbucks says plainly that French Roast is “as dark as our dark roasts get”, with notes of dark caramel and sweet smoke, light body and low acidity. If your benchmark for dark roast is a smoky, oily black bean, this is the bag that matches it.

Who it’s for: people who drink coffee black and want maximum roast flavor. Who should skip it: anyone sensitive to a burnt edge; aroma is the most divided topic in its reviews.

  • Pro: 100% arabica in an 18 oz bag, an Amazon’s Choice listing.
  • Pro: Starbucks publishes the clearest recipe of the five: 10 g per 180 ml, and it advises adding hot water to the cup if that tastes too strong rather than using less coffee.
  • Pro: 4.6/5 from 5,400+ Amazon ratings; reviewers say it makes a strong cup of black coffee that is not bitter.
  • Con: Amazon’s summary says aroma reviews are mixed, with some buyers describing a burnt smell.
  • Con: freshness is also mixed in reviews, with some buyers reporting old beans.

4. illy Intenso: best dark roast for espresso

illy Intenso is the bold roast of illy’s 100% arabica blend, described by illy as full-bodied with notes of cocoa and dried fruit. The beans come in a pressurized can: illy says it removes oxygen and adds nitrogen above atmospheric pressure to keep the coffee fresh. For espresso, illy’s own guidance is 7 g of coffee per shot. If espresso is your main drink, also see our best coffee beans for espresso.

Who it’s for: espresso and moka pot users who want a dark roast that reviewers call smooth and creamy. Who should skip it: drip drinkers on a budget; the can holds only 8.8 oz.

  • Pro: nitrogen-pressurized packaging, unlike the bags of the other four.
  • Pro: Amazon’s review summary praises rich flavor that is not bitter, plus strength and a smooth texture.
  • Pro: 4.5/5 from 3,100+ Amazon ratings.
  • Con: illy’s drip guidance contradicts itself. The US FAQ says 7 g per 8 oz cup (about 1:34, very weak); its product pages say 7-8 g per 100-150 ml (1:12.5 to 1:21). For drip, start around 1:17 like the others.
  • Con: 25 Amazon review mentions of cans arriving without lids.
  • Con: the smallest package here; value for money is a mixed topic in reviews.

5. Death Wish Dark Roast: best high-caffeine dark roast

Death Wish is the only coffee here that blends robusta with arabica, and the brand credits robusta for its extra strength. Death Wish states about 180 mg of caffeine per 6 oz cup when brewed at its recommended 2.5 tablespoons per 6 oz. That is a heavier dose than any other roaster here recommends, which is part of why the cup is so strong.

Who it’s for: people who drink coffee for the caffeine and want a dark roast that is organic and Fair Trade certified. Who should skip it: caffeine-sensitive drinkers and anyone who has more than two cups a day. The FDA cites 400 mg a day as an amount not generally linked to negative effects for healthy adults; two 6 oz cups brewed to the bag recipe already reach about 360 mg.

  • Pro: USDA Organic and Fair Trade certified, per the listing.
  • Pro: the only bag here with a published caffeine figure, so you can plan your intake.
  • Pro: 4.6/5 from 19,100+ Amazon ratings, the largest rating pool in this list.
  • Con: the listing says sourcing varies with crop yields (it names Peru, India, Guatemala, Honduras and Ethiopia), so bags may not taste identical.
  • Con: independent reviewers (Roasty Coffee, The Coffee Concierge) found a best-by date but no roast date on the bag.
  • Con: Coffee Review rated even Death Wish’s medium roast as “very dark” in 2025 and called the cup intense but flat; expect strength over nuance.

How to pick the right dark roast

Start with how you drink it

If you drink it black and like smoke, choose Starbucks French Roast. If you want dark but smoother by reviewers’ accounts, choose Peet’s Major Dickason’s. If you want certifications, choose Kicking Horse (organic, Fairtrade) or Death Wish (organic, Fair Trade).

Match the bean to your brewer

For espresso and moka pots, illy Intenso is the one built around that use. For a French press, use a coarse grind with any of these; our best coffee for French press guide covers more options, and AeroPress vs French Press helps if you are still choosing a brewer. If you own a super-automatic machine, check its manual on oily dark roast beans before loading the hopper.

Dose by weight, not by scoop

A tablespoon of ground coffee holds a different weight depending on grind and roast, which is one reason the tablespoon recipes on these bags give different results in different kitchens. A kitchen scale and the ratios in our table fix most “too bitter” or “too weak” complaints. Start at 1:17 or 1:18 (Peet’s, Starbucks), then move toward 1:15 for stronger or 1:20 for lighter. Grinding fresh helps too; see our best manual coffee grinders.

Decide how much caffeine you want

For a normal cup, any of the four 100% arabica coffees is fine. If you specifically want more caffeine, Death Wish is the only one with robusta and a published caffeine number.

FAQ

What is the darkest roast coffee?

Among mainstream brands, Starbucks says French Roast is the darkest roast it sells (“as dark as our dark roasts get”). In this list, Peet’s Major Dickason’s also measured “very dark” (Agtron 37/41) in Coffee Review’s 2012 test. Coffee Review’s scale classes readings between 25 and 40 as very dark.

Does dark roast coffee have more caffeine?

Roasty Coffee notes that caffeine content is largely a result of the bean type rather than roasting. Death Wish gets its stated 180 mg per 6 oz from a robusta blend and a heavy 2.5 tbsp dose, not from roasting dark.

Is dark roast less acidic?

Roasters describe it that way: Starbucks calls French Roast low in acidity, and Coffee Review’s roast definitions say acidity is muted at dark and very dark roast levels, while bitter and bittersweet tones grow.

What is the best dark roast for cold brew?

We compared cold brew coffees separately, using each maker’s own cold brew recipe: see best coffee for cold brew.

How much dark roast coffee per cup?

Peet’s and Starbucks both say 10 g (about 2 tablespoons) per 6 fl oz of water, roughly 1:18 by weight. That is a sensible default for drip and pour over; adjust by taste from there.
