Best Coffee for Cold Brew: 5 Bags Compared by the Maker’s Own Recipe

The best coffee for cold brew for most people is Stone Street Cold Brew Reserve (Colombian, dark roast, coarse ground): it is ground specifically for steeping, it sits at 4.6/5 from 6,500+ Amazon ratings, and its dark roast gives the chocolate-heavy cup most people expect from cold brew. If you want organic and the easiest recipe to follow, pick Bizzy Smooth & Sweet instead.

What the other roundups skip is the recipe. Every roaster below publishes its own ratio and steep time, and they disagree a lot, from about 1:4 to 1:10 coffee to water. Using the wrong one is the most common reason a good bag makes weak or sour cold brew, so we put each maker’s numbers side by side.

How we chose

We did not run a taste test. We shortlisted coffees sold for cold brew on Amazon, kept only bags with at least 1,500 ratings, and then read the roaster’s product page and brewing guide for each one. Ratings and review themes come from the Amazon listings, checked November 1, 2026. Roast, origin and recipe details come from the roasters’ own pages. Prices change too often to print, so each pick has a button to check the current one.

Each roaster’s own cold brew recipe, compared

This is the table to use before your first batch. The numbers are copied from each brand’s instructions; the column on the right converts them to one rough scale so you can compare. Volume recipes (cups) are converted with Bizzy’s own figure that a 16 oz bag holds about 6 cups of ground coffee, which works out to roughly 75 g per cup. Treat those as estimates, because grind density varies by bag.

Brand Maker’s ratio Steep Dilute? Approx. coffee : water by weight
Stone Street (cold brew guide) 100 g coffee per 1 liter water 12-18 h, room temp Not stated 1:10
Stone Street (Amazon listing) 1 cup coffee to 8 cups water 18-24 h, fridge Ready to drink or concentrate about 1:25
Bizzy 1.5 cups coffee to 3 cups water Overnight (brew bags: 14-20 h, room temp) 2 parts water to 1 part concentrate about 1:6
Cold Brew Lab 1 cup coffee to 4 cups water 12-15 h, fridge To taste about 1:12
Tiny Footprint 1:6 by weight (100 g to 600 g) 16-24 h room temp; add 4-6 h in the fridge 1:1 1:6
Cafe Du Monde No cold brew recipe; hot drip: one 15 oz can per 2.3 gallons n/a Serve brewed coffee over ice n/a

Two things stand out. First, Stone Street’s two published recipes differ by more than double, so if your Stone Street batch tastes thin, you were probably following the 8-cups-of-water version. Second, Bizzy and Tiny Footprint both brew a strong concentrate (about 1:6) and then dilute it. That uses more coffee per batch but gives you control: you can cut it 1:1 for black coffee or 2:1 with milk.

How long a bag lasts follows from the ratio. Bizzy says one 16 oz bag is good for up to 4 brews at its recipe. At Tiny Footprint’s 100 g per batch, a pound (454 g) makes about 4.5 batches. At Stone Street’s 100 g per liter, the same pound steeps about 4.5 liters of water.

1. Stone Street Cold Brew Reserve: best overall

Stone Street, a Brooklyn roaster, sells this as its flagship cold brew coffee: single-origin Colombian Supremo, washed process, grown at 1,200-2,000 m, dark roasted, and described on its site as nutty and chocolatey with smooth acidity. The Amazon version comes pre-ground coarse in a 1 lb resealable, foil-lined bag.

Who it’s for: anyone who wants the familiar coffee-shop cold brew taste and doesn’t own a grinder.

Skip it if: you like bright or fruity coffee. This is a dark roast with a dark-roast profile.

  • Pro: ground specifically for cold brew, so no grinder is needed.
  • Pro: 4.6/5 from 6,500+ Amazon ratings.
  • Pro: Amazon’s review summary counts 881 customers mentioning taste, 814 of them positively, with “not bitter” a common theme.
  • Pro: also sold as whole bean if you want to grind fresh later.
  • Con: Stone Street’s own recipes conflict (1:10 by weight on its guide, 1 cup to 8 cups on the listing), which explains some “weak” reviews.
  • Con: 13 of the 77 reviewers who mention the grind are negative, so a bag can come out finer than expected. Strain through a paper filter if you see sludge.

2. Bizzy Organic Smooth & Sweet: best for beginners

Bizzy is a cold brew company first, so its ground coffee comes with the simplest instructions on this list: 1.5 cups of grounds, 3 cups of water, steep overnight, then mix 2 parts water to 1 part concentrate. The coffee is a USDA organic, 100% Arabica medium roast, coarse ground and micro-sifted, which Bizzy says removes the fine particles that muddy a batch.

Who it’s for: first-timers, and anyone who drinks cold brew with milk and wants a strong base to dilute.

Skip it if: you want the most cups per bag. At Bizzy’s ratio a pound makes up to 4 batches.

  • Pro: 4.6/5 from 11,700+ Amazon ratings, the largest pool among the coffees here made only for cold brew.
  • Pro: organic, Kosher (Orthodox Union) and vegan, per Bizzy’s FAQ; a decaf made with a water-only mountain water process is also available.
  • Pro: Bizzy says concentrate keeps about 7 days in a sealed container in the fridge, which is a useful planning number.
  • Con: value is the weak spot in reviews. Of 395 customers who mention value for money on Amazon, 99 are negative.
  • Con: flavor is not universal: 163 of the 1,307 flavor mentions are negative, and some buyers on Bizzy’s own review page call their batch bitter.

3. Cold Brew Lab Organic Colombian: best for fridge brewing

Cold Brew Lab sells one coffee in different sizes: USDA organic, specialty-grade 100% Arabica Colombian Supremo, dark roasted and ground extra coarse. Its recipe is written for the fridge: 1 cup of coffee to 4 cups of cold filtered water, steeped 12-15 hours, longer if you want a concentrate.

Who it’s for: people who prefer to brew in the fridge from the start, and anyone who wants an organic version of the Stone Street profile.

Skip it if: you want a big, settled rating pool. 1,590 ratings is solid but much smaller than the top two.

  • Pro: extra coarse grind suits mesh filters and French presses, where fines slip through.
  • Pro: organic Colombian Supremo, the same origin and roast level as our top pick.
  • Pro: shortest steep on this list at 12-15 hours, so a batch started after breakfast is ready for the next morning.
  • Con: 4.3/5 from 1,590 Amazon ratings, with 6% one-star reviews in the rating breakdown.
  • Con: the 1:4 cups recipe makes a medium-strength brew, not a true concentrate; add coffee if you plan to dilute with milk.

4. Tiny Footprint Cold Press Elixir: best for a brighter cup

This is the odd one out, on purpose. Tiny Footprint blends light and dark roasts and adds Ethiopian coffee, and describes the result as sweet and silky with subtle fruit and floral notes over a cocoa-like body. It is organic and Kosher, and the roaster calls it carbon negative because it funds reforestation in Ecuador’s Mindo cloud forest.

Who it’s for: people who find dark-roast cold brew flat and want some fruit in the glass.

Skip it if: you want straightforward chocolate-and-nut cold brew; pick Stone Street.

  • Pro: the roaster’s recipe is weight-based (1:6) and precise, with clear fixes: if a batch tastes sour, use a darker roast, finer grind or more time.
  • Pro: 4.4/5 from 1,700+ Amazon ratings; the review summary mentions no acid aftertaste and a smooth texture.
  • Pro: sold in 1, 3 and 5 lb bags on the roaster’s site, and the larger sizes cost less per ounce.
  • Con: the Amazon title says “ground” but doesn’t state the grind size; the roaster’s own store sells a separate coarse cold brew grind. Check the listing before buying, or buy whole bean and grind coarse.
  • Con: its recommended 16-24 hour room-temperature steep is the longest here.

5. Cafe Du Monde Coffee and Chicory: best for New Orleans-style iced coffee

Cafe Du Monde’s can is not sold as cold brew coffee. The New Orleans coffee stand, open since 1862, labels it for drip pots and percolators, and its own iced coffee instructions are simply brewed coffee poured over ice. We include it because home cold brewers use it widely for New Orleans iced coffee and Vietnamese-style coffee with condensed milk, and it has the largest rating pool here.

Who it’s for: anyone who wants a bold, slightly bitter, roasted flavor to stand up to sweetened condensed milk.

Skip it if: you have never had chicory. Several Amazon reviewers call it an acquired taste.

  • Pro: 4.6/5 from 28,700+ Amazon ratings.
  • Pro: the chicory adds body, which survives dilution with milk and ice.
  • Pro: the 15 oz can seals well, per reviewers.
  • Con: it’s a drip grind, finer than cold brew coffee, so expect more sediment in a jar or French press. Pour the finished batch through a paper filter.
  • Con: no cold brew ratio from the maker, so you start from a general recipe (see the FAQ below).

How to choose: match the bag to how you drink it

You drink it black over ice. Choose Stone Street or Cold Brew Lab and brew close to drinking strength, around 1:10 by weight. Diluting a concentrate works too, but black coffee shows a thin batch first.

You add milk or creamer. Make a concentrate at about 1:6 (Bizzy’s or Tiny Footprint’s recipe) and dilute after. Milk flattens a weak brew fast.

You want condensed milk or a New Orleans flavor. Cafe Du Monde. Its chicory and dark roast are made to sit under sweet milk.

You don’t have a grinder. Buy a bag sold pre-ground coarse (Stone Street, Bizzy, Cold Brew Lab). Stone Street’s guide warns that grounds that are too fine seep through the filter, while grounds that are too coarse extract too little and taste sour. If you do own one, a manual burr grinder set to its coarsest setting lets you buy whole bean and grind each batch fresh.

You brew in a French press. It works for all five; Stone Street suggests about 1:5 coffee to water in a press, fridge for 12-24 hours, then cut 1:1. Our AeroPress vs French Press comparison covers which brewer handles big batches, and our coffee for French press guide lists hot-brew picks.

FAQ

What roast is best for cold brew?

Medium to dark is the safe choice. Four of the five coffees here are medium or dark, and Tiny Footprint’s own troubleshooting says a sour batch needs a darker roast, finer grind or more time. Light roasts work but need a longer steep or a finer grind.

Can I use regular ground coffee for cold brew?

Yes, but regular coffee is usually ground for drip, which is finer. Expect more sediment and a stronger, sometimes bitter batch. Shorten the steep toward 12 hours and filter through paper. That is how most people use Cafe Du Monde.

How long should cold brew steep?

The roasters here range from 12 to 24 hours. Fridge brewing sits at the slow end: Tiny Footprint adds 4-6 hours if you steep in the fridge instead of on the counter. Stone Street suggests 12 hours minimum and up to 18 if the brew is weak.

How long does homemade cold brew last?

Bizzy says about 7 days in a sealed container in the fridge for best flavor; Stone Street’s listing says up to two weeks. Plan on one week and taste before you pour.

Is whole bean better than pre-ground for cold brew?

Whole bean stays fresh longer once opened, and you control the grind. Pre-ground coarse is easier and avoids the fines a cheap blade grinder makes. If you go whole bean, our espresso bean guide explains roast dates and freshness.
