You will definitely include this dal from now on to your lunch or dinner menu. This mung dal recipe is easy to make and very light. You can have this dal as it is or can accompany it with chapatis or rice.

The tadka or tempering, we call it baghar, done with Indian spices, make it full of aroma. The flavours of Indian spices infused in moong dal tadka recipe will make you to have more.

How to Make Moong Dal Tadka

The main ingredients for this Moong Dal Tadka Recipe are mung dal itself, Indian spices and desi ghee or pure ghee.

Everything you need

  • 170 gm Moong Dal
  • 1/2 tsp Rai (mustard seeds)
  • 1 pinch Hing
  • 1 tsp Zeera (cumin seeds)
  • 1/2 finely sliced onion
  • 1 finely chopped tomato
  • 1/2 tbsp Ginger-garlic paste
  • 1/2 tbsp Dhaniya Powder
  • 1/2 tbsp Cumin powder
  • 1/2 tbsp garam masala
  • 1/4 tbsp haldi
  • Coriander leaves to garnish
  • Salt to taste
  • 1-2 green chillies
  • 3 tbsp refined oil
  • Water as required

Ingredients for the Tempering

  • 2 tbsp Desi ghee
  • 1 Bay leaf
  • 2-3 Cloves
  • 1 Black cardamom
  • 1/2 finely sliced onion

Make the Moong Dal Tadka

Soak moong dal for two hours. Retain the water of the soaked moong dal.

In a pan pour the retained water – you can add more water if needed – boil the soaked moong dal till soft. The moong dal shouldn’t turn mushy. It should be just soft. As we say in Hindi, khadi moong ki dal.

In a wok, add 1 tbsp oil and fry the mustard seeds. Add a pinch of hing, zeera (cumin) and finely sliced onion, and saute till onions turn light brown. Add ginger-garlic paste and saute for 20 seconds and add tomato, saute till it turns mushy. Now add dhaniya powder, zeera powder, garam masala, salt, green chillies and haldi, and saute for 10-15 seconds more.

Add the boiled moong dal to the masala now. Mix well. Turn the stove to low flame and cook this dal for only 5 minutes. Sprinkle water if required.

For Tempering of Moong Dal

In a small wok, heat desi ghee. Add zeera. Let it splutter for 10 seconds. Add onions and fry till light brown. Now add bay leaf, cloves, black cardamom. Saute for 10 more seconds. and add it to the moong dal.

Garnish Moong Dal tadka with coriander leaves. Serve it hot with chapati or rice. Or you can have it like a soup. It’s healthy and tasty!
