The best Nespresso machine for most people is the Vertuo Pop+: it brews five drink sizes from a 5 oz coffee to a 12 oz mug plus single and double espresso, heats up in 30 seconds and holds 4.2/5 from 1,700+ Amazon ratings. If you drink espresso rather than mugs of coffee, the smaller Essenza Mini is the better buy, and if you want lattes with a real steam wand, look at the Creatista Plus. The deciding question comes before the model, though: Vertuo or Original capsules. We explain that first, because it decides what you pay for every cup afterwards.

How we chose
We did not test these machines in a kitchen. We compared the specs Nespresso, De’Longhi and Breville publish on their product pages and Amazon listings, read the Amazon “Customers say” summaries built from owner reviews, and only kept models with a meaningful number of ratings. Every number below is listed in the Sources at the end with the date we checked it. Prices change too often to print, so each pick links to the current Amazon price.
Step 1: Vertuo or Original?
Nespresso sells two capsule systems, and the capsules don’t cross over. Pick the system that matches the drink you actually make most mornings, then pick the machine.
- Vertuo machines read a barcode on each capsule and adjust water volume, temperature, infusion time and capsule rotation to match it (Nespresso calls this Centrifusion). That is how one machine makes everything from a short espresso to an 18 oz carafe-style Alto, depending on the model. Vertuo capsules only work in Vertuo machines, and the Amazon listings state they are compatible with Vertuo machines exclusively.
- Original machines push water through the capsule at up to 19 bar, the same basic principle as a cafรฉ espresso machine. They make espresso and lungo, and on milk models, cappuccino and latte. The Original capsule format is also sold by other coffee brands, so you have more capsule choice.
A simple rule: if your normal drink is a mug of black coffee, go Vertuo. If it’s an espresso, or a milk drink built on an espresso shot, go Original.

Specs from the Amazon listings and the Breville and Nespresso product pages; heat-up times are the makers’ own figures.
1. Nespresso Vertuo Pop+ by De’Longhi: best for most people
The Pop+ is the cheapest way into Vertuo and covers every drink size most households use: 5, 8 and 12 oz coffees plus single and double espresso, brewed hot or over ice. It is compact, with the 25 fl oz water tank on the side rather than the back, so it fits under cabinets and in shallow corners. Once connected to the Nespresso app, the machine receives updates and maintenance prompts, and it shows a descaling alert on its own.
Who it’s for: anyone who drinks one or two mugs of black coffee a day and wants no setup beyond inserting a capsule.
Skip it if: you brew for several people back to back (the small tank needs frequent refills) or you want to buy cheaper third-party capsules.
- Pro: five drink sizes from one button, set automatically by the capsule barcode
- Pro: 30-second heat-up and two-minute auto power-off (listing comparison table)
- Pro: side-mounted tank and an adjustable drip tray for taller cups
- Pro: Nespresso states the body uses 35% recycled plastic
- Con: the 25 fl oz tank is the smallest Vertuo tank here; owners mention refilling often when brewing mug sizes
- Con: several owner reviews describe it as loud while brewing
- Con: Vertuo capsules only, so you can’t shop around for pods
2. Vertuo Pop+ with Aeroccino milk frother: best Vertuo bundle for milk drinks
This is the same Pop+ machine sold with the Aeroccino3, a separate jug-style frother that makes hot or cold milk foam. Because the frother is a separate unit, you froth while the coffee brews and rinse one small jug afterwards; there are no milk lines inside the machine to clean. It carries a higher rating than the standalone Pop+ listing (4.4/5 from 700+ ratings).
Who it’s for: people who want a big Vertuo mug most days and an iced latte or cappuccino-style drink some days.
Skip it if: you want cafรฉ-style microfoam for latte art; a jug frother makes foam, not textured steamed milk.
- Pro: hot and cold foam, so iced drinks work too
- Pro: frother cleans separately from the coffee machine
- Pro: same five Vertuo sizes and 30-second heat-up as the base Pop+
- Con: two appliances on the counter and two plugs
- Con: same small 25 fl oz tank and Vertuo-only capsules
3. Nespresso VertuoPlus Deluxe by De’Longhi: best for households that brew a lot
The VertuoPlus Deluxe gives up the Pop+’s 12 oz size (it brews 5 and 8 oz coffee plus single and double espresso) but has a 60 fl oz water tank, more than twice the Pop+’s 25 fl oz. In a house where three people each make a coffee before work, that difference means filling the tank once a day instead of every couple of brews. Amazon’s comparison table also lists a 40-second heat-up and a nine-minute auto-off.
Who it’s for: couples and families who drink 5 or 8 oz coffees and hate refilling the tank.
Skip it if: you want the 12 oz mug size, or you are short on counter depth.
- Pro: 60 fl oz tank, the largest of the Vertuo picks here
- Pro: 4.4/5 from 1,500+ Amazon ratings
- Pro: adjustable cup support for short and tall cups
- Con: four sizes only, no 12 oz option
- Con: slower 40-second heat-up than the Pop+
- Con: on the standard VertuoPlus listing, Amazon’s review summary flags durability and leaking as recurring complaints
4. Nespresso Essenza Mini by De’Longhi: best for espresso drinkers and small kitchens
The Essenza Mini is the best-rated machine in this list: 4.6/5 from 6,000+ Amazon ratings. It is an Original machine with a 19-bar pump, a 25-second heat-up and two programmable buttons for espresso and lungo. Its listed footprint is 4.33 inches deep by 12.79 inches wide by 8.07 inches high, which makes it the smallest machine here. Amazon’s review summary says owners like its compact size, its brew speed and its reliability, with no recurring failure pattern reported.
Who it’s for: espresso drinkers, people with a tiny kitchen or dorm room, and anyone who wants access to third-party Original capsules.
Skip it if: you drink big mugs of coffee. An Original lungo is a small cup, not a mug.
- Pro: highest rating and largest rating count of the six
- Pro: smallest footprint in this comparison
- Pro: works with Original capsules from Nespresso and other brands
- Con: 0.6 L tank, so frequent refills
- Con: owners are split on coffee temperature; some find it not hot enough
- Con: no milk frother in this version
5. Nespresso Lattissima One by De’Longhi: easiest one-button latte
The Lattissima One puts the frother inside the machine. You pour the amount of milk you want into a small single-serve jug, press the milk button and it froths the milk straight into your cup before brewing the espresso on top. There are three milk recipes (espresso macchiato, cappuccino, latte macchiato) plus espresso and lungo. The jug has a detachable lid and is dishwasher safe, and the listing gives an 18-second heat-up, plus 15 seconds for milk drinks.
Who it’s for: people who want one milk drink at a time with no steaming skill at all.
Skip it if: reliability matters more to you than convenience; it has the lowest rating here.
- Pro: true one-button cappuccino and latte macchiato
- Pro: dishwasher-safe milk jug, no milk left sitting in the machine
- Pro: 33.8 fl oz tank, larger than the Pop+ and Essenza Mini
- Con: 3.9/5 from 880+ US ratings, the weakest score in this list
- Con: Amazon UK’s review summary reports mixed reliability, mixed views on cleaning, and some owners find the foam too airy
- Con: the jug makes one drink at a time
6. Nespresso Creatista Plus by Breville: best for latte art at home
The Creatista Plus is the only machine here with a real steam wand, and it automates the hard part. You choose one of 11 milk temperatures (133-169ยฐF) and 8 foam textures, and the wand steams the milk in the included stainless steel jug and purges itself afterwards. Breville lists a 3-second heat-up, a 1.5 L tank and eight recipes, from ristretto to flat white. The body is brushed stainless steel and the listing states a two-year warranty.
Who it’s for: milk-drink fans who want silky, pourable milk and control over how hot it is.
Skip it if: you mostly drink black coffee. You’d be paying for a steam wand you don’t use.
- Pro: adjustable milk temperature and texture, unusual for a capsule machine
- Pro: self-purging wand and a display that walks you through cleaning and descaling
- Pro: 1.5 L tank, 3-second heat-up
- Con: the most expensive machine in this list
- Con: Amazon Canada’s review summary notes mixed opinions on reliability, cleaning and temperature
- Con: owners mention the wand clogging with heavy use unless cleaned with the supplied pin
Which Nespresso machine fits your mornings
- One mug of black coffee a day: Vertuo Pop+.
- Several people, 5-8 oz cups: VertuoPlus Deluxe, for the 60 fl oz tank.
- Mug coffee plus the odd iced latte: Vertuo Pop+ with Aeroccino.
- Espresso, small kitchen, or you want cheaper capsule options: Essenza Mini.
- Cappuccino with zero skill: Lattissima One, accepting the weaker rating.
- Lattes you care about, flat whites, latte art: Creatista Plus.
Three details decide day-to-day happiness more than any spec sheet. First, tank size against how many cups you brew before work: refilling a 25 fl oz tank after two mugs gets old fast. Second, where the milk lives: separate frothers (Aeroccino) and removable jugs (Lattissima One, Creatista Plus) are easy to clean, while you should avoid leaving milk in any machine. Third, descaling: every machine here has a descaling alert, and following it is part of owning one.
If capsules aren’t a must, compare these with the bean-to-cup machines in our automatic espresso machine guide or a manual brewer from our AeroPress vs French Press comparison. For a first semi-automatic machine, see our espresso machines for beginners.
FAQ
Can I use Original capsules in a Vertuo machine?
No. Vertuo machines need capsules with the Vertuo barcode, and Original capsules are a different shape and size. Buy the machine for the capsule system you want to stay with.
Which Nespresso makes the biggest cup?
Vertuo. The Pop+ goes up to 12 oz, and Nespresso lists an 18 oz size on its Vertuo buying guide for models that support it. Original machines top out at a lungo.
Do Nespresso machines make real espresso?
Original machines brew with up to 19 bar of pressure, the same principle as a cafรฉ machine. Vertuo uses Centrifusion, spinning the capsule while water flows through it, which gives a different texture with a thicker layer of foam on top.
Is a Nespresso with a built-in frother worth it?
Only if you drink milk drinks most days. A separate Aeroccino is simpler to clean; the Creatista Plus gives the best milk texture but costs the most.
