Gur ki Chai, an Easy Recipe for Tea Lovers

Gur ki chai also known as Gur wali chai is one of my favourites followed by Irani chai, normal tea and lemon tea. When we say Gur ki Chai (tea with jaggery), it directly implies that my dad will make it. So, we can call it dad’s recipe (for a change it’s not mom’s recipe ).

There are various benefits of having gur. You might have noticed elderly would take gur, instead of any other sweet, just after having lunch or dinner. Because jaggery or gur helps in digestion. It also helps in purifying blood and curing dry cough and cold.

Gur ki Chai is much famous among north Indians. If it is famous in other parts of the country, please correct me.

You have to be very careful while making Gur ki chai or jaggery tea. Many complain that when they pour milk, it curdles up. Scroll down and you will get the recipe for gur ki chai and the trick too.

Time Taken – 5-6 minutes

Serves 1 cup of Gur ki Chai.

Everything you need to make your Chai at Home

  • 1 medium piece of gur or jaggery
  • 1 small bay leaf
  • 1 very small piece of crushed ginger
  • 1/4 tsp cardamom powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp tea leaves

How to cook Gur ki Chai

Add water in a pan and put it on a high flame. Add bay leaf, crushed ginger, cardamom powder, gur (jaggery)and tea leaves to it. Let it boil for 1 minute. Boil until you get the aroma of the tea, stir in between with a spoon.

You will get a nice aroma as the water boils.

In another pan, pour the milk and bring it to boil. Put off flame and pour the hot milk in your tea cup.

Warning! Do not think of mixing everything, milk and tea water together, in the pan and boil. The milk will immediately curdle. And then you would have to discard the tea … don’t do this mistake. Many people think by mixing everything together, they will make the gur ki chai in less time. But it is not like that. Milk turns sour immediately.

Now, put off the flame of the tea water. Place a strainer on tea cup one by one and pour the tea water slowly in the cup.
